Socketry And Socket Sets Make For Easy Fastening - ToolsRUs

When working with fasteners such as nuts and bolts, socketry and socket sets are needed to provide you with the appropriate mechanical advantage to tighten or loosen them. Sets come a numerous sizes, from small, dozen-piece sets to extensive sets with ninety pieces or more. It all depends on what you need.

Sets typically contain two socket wrenches, a number of interchangeable heads or sockets and a variety of accessories and add-ons. Most sets feature a minimum of two wrenches, several sockets, one or more extenders, a converter and a universal joint.

Socket wrenches or ratchets are handled shafts with a square drive protruding from one end. The ratcheting mechanism is controlled via a switch that is positioned opposite the drive. To change the direction in which force is applied, flip the switch. The position of the switch determines the direction of force, and the alternating ratchet mechanism allows you to loosen or tighten a fastener without having to alternate the movement of your hand as with a spanner. Ratchet square drives come in small and large varieties. To function properly, the male end must match the female end on a given socket. Converters can be used to move up or down in size.

Cylindrical-shaped sockets have a square-shaped female end to fit over the ratchet drive. On the opposite side is the hollow, working end. The hollow has either a 6- or a 12-point internal shape. Whereas 6-point sockets can only fit over hex-shaped nuts or bolts, 12-points sockets can fit both hex and square fasteners. Sockets come in metric, American and imperial measurements. 3mm to 50mm metric sockets are common to basic socket sets. Both shallow and deep sockets are available.

A number of other tools are found in a good socket set. Extension bars increase the reach of the socket which is handy for hard-to-access fasteners. To use big-drive sockets with a small-drive ratchet or vice versa, attach a converter. If you need to bend the wrench while working with a fastener, an articulate universal joint adaptor lets you do it.

a few choices include Rasp Files, Block Planes, nut drivers

Basically, socketry and socket sets provide you with a mechanical advantage, letting you apply a tremendous amount of torque to nuts, bolts and other hardware that is immovable any other way.

Giant Contact Switch dropper seatpost review (Bike Radar)

Giant developed the Contact Switch post for their own bikes but it's also
available as an aftermarket purchase for 2012. It only comes in one size –
30.9mm – and needs a bit of TLC to keep it running smoothly, but it’s
potentially a top value option.

**Design**

The cable-actuated Contact Switch features 100mm (4in) of travel and can be
adjusted infinitely within that range using the handlebar remote. Not only is
it one of the cheapest remote dropper posts available, it also uses a separate
cartridge to house the air sprung and oil damped internals, which means much
less chance of contamination.

To keep both lateral shimmy and wear to a minimum, it features a proprietary
anti-twist system – the post runs on four triangular-shaped tracks on the
stanchion tube, instead of using the more common key-and-slot design.

Setup is quick but slightly fiddly, due to use of an internal cable clamp.
This gives the Contact Switch a sleek look but means you have to remove the
saddle clamp assembly and fumble around inside the seatpost head every time
you want to fit a new cable.

_Initial setup is a little cumbersome due to limited workspace ...
