[Ike]Let's All See What Ike's Doing Now!

If you give a man a fish... - 08 Mar 2008
I'm sure you've heard this adage before:

"If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day. If you teach a man a fish, he eats for life."

What bothers me is that people just don't freaking seem to get this anymore. What would it kill them to actually LEARN the skills they're begging other people to do for them and never again feel as though they're bothering that person?

Take me for example. I don't mind helping people. In fact, I love helping people. But there just comes a point where it's fucking ridiculous to a point where you want to punch a hole in the wall. At my university, I don't know how the hell this came about, but somehow I've come to be known as "the guy who knows computers".

Need help with that really easy Microsoft Word document? Talk to Ike, he's good with computers.

Need to right-click something in PowerPoint? Talk to Ike, he's good with computers.

Need to hack into the school's grading system and get your records changed? Talk to Ike, he's good with computers.

Need someone to scratch your ass? Talk to Ike, he's good with computers.

Seriously, it's nuts. What makes this all the more trifling for me is that I've developed such a nice guy persona, that if I were to say "no" for whatever reason (i.e. I have a test, I'm extremely busy, I'm sick, or someone in my family died), I'm apparently some kind of jerk or I'm being mean. If I'm called upon at 12 midnight (WHEN I'M TRYING TO SLEEP) and I say no, I'm twice the jerk I was before.

The number of times I've had to help people like this, it makes one wonder, "Gee Ike, why don't you start charging money?" I've tried. After that, they label me as a dick and move on about their business. Perhaps next time, I should remind them that I'm the only one who willingly breaks his own back to help them and that a little compensation for once would be nice.

Another thing that really irritates me is how nowadays, you have a disturbingly high number of people (in my experience) who claim exuberant proficiency in computers just because they know how to change the graphics on their MySpace pages.

No, I'm sorry folks. Tracing does not make you good at art. Copying CSS for your MySpace page does not make you great at computers.

Seriously, for all the time people spend talking trash on MySpace and oggling each other's pictures, why don't they invest that time into actually learning how to put together well-crafted letter in Microsoft Word, or learn how to build a basic webpage in SeaMonkey's composer window?

I mean, it's not exactly rocket science, but come on, I'm not going to drag my ass out of bed at 2 AM to help you with an assignment at the last minute just because you're too computer-illiterate to do it yourself, and all with no thanks when all is said and done amidst a stream of catty remarks and snide commentary.

tl;dr LEARN HOW TO USE THE DAMN COMPUTER

[Chris]Chris Trumbour's You Know What Really Grinds My Gears?

Oh no, it happened. - 09 May 2008
FLASHBACK: March 26th, 2007
You know what really grinds my gears? Forum drama! Yep, the phenomenon where people begin to forget that the internet is not a serious place, and have massive, long, drawn-out bickerfests. It's lawltastic!
...
And if that wasn't enough, MFGG (a site that is already a bit unstable as it is) is going through dramabomb fallout right now, involving MechaBowser's brother using MechaBowser's account to blackmail some dude named MechaSonic with the intent to leak personal information. And Trojans. Currently the forum is split in three: people that want to repeal MechaBoswer's PERMANENT ban, people that want MechaBowser to stay banned, and people (like me) that want the other two groups to just shut up and move on.

The moral of the story is: It's the internet. Serious business does not occur on the Internet.

And that's what really grinds my gears.

Note: If MFGG splits because of the MechaBowser dramafest, it'll be the downfall of one of the largest Mario fansites on the Internet. You don't know what you have until you lose it...

--------------------------------
You know what really grinds my gears? When I predict horrible events. I was off on some details (like who started it), but the jist is close enough.

MFGG is crumbling apart. Or, as Ike put it, "MFGG's disappearing up its own asshole". Why is this happening? Nightwing dropped the biggest dramabomb possible onto MFGG. See, before all this, the staff was a bit... splintered? Kins, RII, Klobber, and Shadowman have left MFGG. Those that remain are rarely on due to real life, or are impossible to contact (goddamnit Black Squirrel get MSN or AIM). Some new people were hired, like jas and Yoshiman, but like all humans, they made a few mistakes.

However, it's what a certain user did that caused everything to go pear-shaped. Nightwing revealed something Yoshiman did long ago to check for a few certain specific things. He had grabbed a backup of the Private Messages from MFGG and searched through them for anything negative about his and jas' actions as admins. When nothing came up, Yoshiman deleted the backup and never did it again. But Nightwing had to reveal this, and turn it into a dramafest by bringing up a relationship with Yoshiman and jas and trying to ruin it with words.

Yoshiman apologised, swore never to do something like that again (not like he really could, he's not an admin anymore, neither is jas), and began to move on with his life.

Then Nightwing started to bring it up again. And again. And again.

What the hell, Nightwing? We get the point, you can stop shoving it into our faces and down our throats. It's time to move on.

However he won't. He wants to keep the drama going. To keep the tensions high. All for the destruction of MFGG's community as a form of entertainment, it seems.

Well, he's getting just that. Everyone on MFGG is leaving to other sites, like here and M:FM. The past is being put behind those affected by all this. Everyone is starting over, to make for a nicer and brighter community.

But MFGG... welp, you will be missed.

And that's what really grinds my gears.
