How To Find A Pipe Leak And Stop It
Leaks in plumbing pipes usually occur at the worst possible times - during spells of extreme cold, for example, when plumbers are busiest and it is difficult or impossible to get outside help. Fortunately, many pipe leaks can be repaired temporarily or permanently by do-it-yourself methods and water service can be restored.
The leaks that are most difficult to repair are the ones caused by freezing, since the replacement of the damaged pipe is necessary. Another cause of leaks is pipe corrosion which results in thin spots and punctures in pipes. Leaks which are not that difficult to repair are the ones that occur at fittings and joints of pipe.
Most, if not all, of pipe leaks could be prevented by performing some simple tasks. For example, those pipes that you think have the most chance to freeze should be insulated using heat tapes. Another thing you can do is to carefully caulk all the cracks which usually occur near pipes which are closest to wall. But if a leak does occur, you should immediately shut off water supply to that pipe.
Every occupant of a home should know the location of the main water shutoff valve. In homes with basements, the main valve is usually near the water meter or pump, but in some homes it is under the kitchen sink or in some other unlikely place.
There are also fixtures which have shutoff valves for individual pipes. So to stop this pipe from leaking, you only need to shut off that particular valve and that way keep the water service in other parts of your home.
Frozen pipes that develop leaks won't drip until they start thawing, of course, and can't be fixed until they are fully thawed and emptied of water. Thawing can be speeded by opening the faucet at the end of the frozen pipe and applying heat working backward from the faucet so steam and melting water have an outlet.
The safest, but rather slow, thawing method is soaking rags in hot water and wrapping them around the frozen pipe. Don't try to use a propane torch for thawing since it generates a lot of steam which can damage the pipe.
Most homes have copper pipes. To repair this type of pipe just use a hacksaw to cut out the damaged section. Make sure that you do this very carefully on both sides of the split.
If you don't want to deal with soldering the pipes there is also a possibility of using a short length of polybutylene or CPVC plastic pipe to join the cut ends. They both handle hot and cold water. You should always ask for directions when buying these fittings since there are different ways they are fitted.
When going shopping for replacement parts, bring the section of the pipe that you cut out. This way you'll immediately know the diameter and the length of the pipe you need to buy.
Repairing an aluminum fishing boat with a lot of small unseen holes.?
I have an aluminum jon boat that is pretty old, but does it's job to get me around in my pond at home. It has a lot of little holes in it and I can't find all of them. The ones I did find I patched up with JB Weld Water Weld putty and it worked GREAT.... But my problem is the ones that I can't readily find. Is there anything that I can just put all over the bottom of the boat? I've thought about the aluminum roofing sealant, but I don't want to mess it up. Does anyone know of anything that could fix my problem?
Thanks-
hey man, you could fiberglass the bottom of the boat but that gets expensive. most likely the leaks are coming from the seams around the rivits and you could fill up the boat with water (on top of some saw horses) and find about where the leaks are coming from but as soon as you do that later on down the road other seams are going to start leaking. what i would do it lip it upside down and lay a few thin layers of that roofing seal that you have. put on a couple layers let it dry for a day or so and then add another layer. after you get it good and thick, go to the auto parts store and get a few cans of that spray on bed liner. spray that stuff all inside your boat floor. get a good coat on the floor, that will help with the holes as well and it will also help with the floor being slick. my friends and have done this on a few boats and they are still floatin. good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience
A Curriculum of Toys (MAKE Magazine)
Every pundit cries that education is broken, the standards of standard-based
education are mixed up. I agree completely! All we really need are good toys.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a curriculum of life skills and the toys
that would support it (and not only because I have a 2-year-old). What are the
