Woodworking Beginner
For a start up woodworker to dive into the deep end of woodworking by trying the intricate projects that are often the subjects in magazines, can result in failure and frustration. I wonder how many aspiring woodworkers were put off by the elaborate but very beautiful pieces of furniture which were simply not within their capabilities.
This article is not intended to make the beginner an expert but just to show what is involved in creating a project that is simple to make. Plans cannot be given here as they are available elsewhere, but I will give an idea of the process that is followed when making something. It is not intended to give detailed instructions, just to give an idea of what is involved in creating a project.
null The process is the same whether a coffee table or a kitchen table is made, so let's make a coffee table. Choose a size: make it 4ft x 2ft and 16inches high. Now select the wood. It is better to choose a more conventional and cheaper type of wood for the first project as it can be made to look like an expensive wood type by staining it.
The top can be made out of a piece of board or plywood with the same type of wood or veneer that will be used for the other parts. Make a border out of say a 2" x 1" piece of wood to hide the edges of the board. The edge can be routed in a nice pattern to make it look better. Where the edges meet a miter needs to be cut. It is perhaps easier to make this frame and cut the board to fit exactly inside but make sure it is square..
For a coffee table the legs need to be looking a bit more detailed than a normal kitchen table. Tapered legs that taper toward the feet are an option to turned legs, which require a lathe, which may be beyond the means of a start-up woodworker. With a router that you may own (or borrow one), you can rout a pattern onto the edge of the legs or onto the legs themselves just don't try to be too fancy.
The rails can be made to look more fancy by routing a pattern on them or cutting the bottom of them into a curve or other pattern. An overhang of approximately 2" all round can be given unless it should have a modern look with flush straight legs and no overhang. The legth of the rails can be calculated as follows: 4ft less 2 x 2", less the thickness of the legs x 2 for the side rails. The same for the end rails but now the width is less.
To simplify matters and prevent the cutting of tenons and mortices, the legs and rails can be joined with dowels. Three dowels per joint with dowels not less than 3/8". Unless you hav access to a drill press, the drilling of the dowel holes can be tricky. The drill needs to be exactly 90 degrees to the face of the joint. You can buy little marker plugs with your dowels.
Into every end of the rails three holes have to be drilled with the rail being held in a vice. Hold the drill exactly 90 degrees to the face being drilled. When this is done place the marker plugs into the holes. Position the leg carefully to where it must join up with the rail and tap it with a hammer. Thus the holes that need to be drilled in the legs are marked exactly where they must be drilled, then drill them to the right depth.
For the next step you will need clamps. Glue the dowels and the face of the rails and press into the legs with the clamp. If you only have two clamps, clamp the sides first and when the glue has set, assemble the frame with the same procedure as described.
The table top can also be fitted with dowels. Care must however be taken not to drill right through the table top, ruining it. Use a depth gauge on your drill. This is the stage where the the job is finished except for the optional staining and then varnishing the table and voila! You are the proud owner of your own self made coffee table.
